What is a Senior Project?

A Senior Project is a comprehensive assignment that is designed to be a culmination of each student’s academic experiences from his/her high school career.  Senior projects include a formal research paper, a comprehensive writing portfolio, student/mentor collaboration, development of a career-related product and a final presentation of the product.  The project starts then it builds during the student’s sophomore year with an introductory research paper.  During a student’s junior year, he/she will construct resumes’, cover letters, and data sheets.

Who are the Instuctors for the Senior Project?

Mr. Pfeifer: Will oversee the mentoring process, project deadlines, creation of the product, comprehensive portfolio, and final product presentations.

Do all Seniors Have to do a Project?

Yes, it is a graduation requirement for the Marsing School District; this includes every graduating senior (regular education, special education, and English Second Language students) with adaptations set up by the instructors.

What Grade do I Need to Pass?

The grade will be pass/fail for the presentation, and product/project.

The comprehensive writing portfolio will be assessed by the English department and teacher evaluation committee using the six traits of writing standards and rubrics.  A score of 4 or higher must be earned to be considered proficient.  A score earned using this rubric does not necessarily match a percentage score; it is a standard of proficiency established by the Marsing School District.

The majority of the non-written project (mentor agreements, project development, observation times, etc.), will be evaluated using the above standards of the district.

The final presentation will be presented to an individual or committee of evaluators using a rubric and the district’s grading policy for evaluation.  This tool evaluates everything from speaking skills to the professionalism of the presenter and the product.

When is the Portfollio/Presentation Due?

The portfolio/presentation portion of the project is scheduled for May 1-2, 2012.

What Happens if a Student Fails the Portfolio or the Presentation Portion of the Project?

The student would first meet with those instructors of the Senior Project and go over the portfolio or the presentation and discuss the areas of improvement needed to pass.  A panel of teachers from the high school, not associated with the project, will be the final evaluators, and will re-evaluate the student’s performance.  Re-evaluations will be one week later, May 13, 2012.
