The Marsing Middle School Media Center serves approximately 200 sixth through eighth grade students and an instructional staff of 15. The 6,700 titles in the collection circulated 6,700 times during the 2006-2007 school year. The collection consists of fiction and non-fiction books, a reference section, videos and a multiple copy collection. There are eight computers for student use. A library assistant manages this media center for 5 hours per day. The profits from the school store and fine monies go toward the purchase of additional books and the monetary awards for the top 3 students who accumulate the most Accelerated Reader (AR) points during the school year. In the spring after reading at least three of the nominated books, students vote on their favorite Young Reader’s Choice book, which is sponsored by the Pacific Northwest Library Association. Students are responsible for the materials they check out. Most library materials are checked out for 10 school days, with longer checkout periods available upon request. If materials are overdue, students are charged $ .05 a day for each day overdue, excluding weekends, holidays, and days the student is absent. Reference materials can be checked out overnight.
